What Echo Band trains

Echo Band trains sound and sequence memory: hearing a series of things and keeping them in the right order. It is a cousin of the classic "copy the tune" game, with pads that each have their own colour, shape and note, so it also works for colour-blind players.

Why it matters for a grade-3 child

Grade-3 classrooms are full of spoken sequences: "Put your book away, get your coat and line up at the door." Remembering instructions in order, the sounds in a long word or the steps of a song all lean on the same skill.

How to play

  1. Listen and watch: the pads light up and play a short tune.
  2. Keep the tune in your head. Humming it quietly helps.
  3. Play it back on the pads, note by note.

Bip reads every instruction aloud and shows a 3-second demo first, so children who don’t read yet can play too.

How it adapts to your child

Echo Band has levels from 1 to 100. Two right answers in a row make it a little harder; one mistake makes it a bit easier. That keeps your child at about 80% success: hard, but I can do it.

  • Level 1 3 pads and 2-note tunes.
  • Level 10 3-note tunes.
  • Level 14 A fourth pad joins the band.
  • Level 22 4-note tunes.
  • Level 44 5 pads.
  • Level 50 6-note tunes, played a little faster.
  • Level 74 6 pads.
  • Level 100 Up to 10 notes.

A tune never repeats the same pad three times in a row, so every round is fair.

Tip: play it together

Give the notes names or words ("star, star, heart, moon") or sing them back together. Remembering something in two ways at once, as sounds and as words, is a genuine memory trick worth teaching.

Can your child beat a grown-up?

Bip's yardstick is that most grown-ups can play back about 6 notes in a row and most 8-year-olds about 4. It is a rough figure, similar to other "repeat the sequence" tests, so Bip always says "about".

These are rough, typical figures from classic memory tests, not a score or an IQ test. Children and adults vary a lot.
